I promise I’ll get to the knitting meme tomorrow, but today I’ve got a Degrassi tidbit to share. So, in my quest to watch all the 4 Degrassi shows my TiVo tapes daily, I have noticed a very knitting-themed one today.

As you might remember, in the “Degrassi, Old School” show, Spike (Christine) had a baby, Emma, with a boy, Shane. In one episode, Shane took acid and jumped off a bridge. As far as I’ve seen, he was in a coma. So in this “very special” “Degrassi: The Next Generation” episode, Emma (who is now a main character and is somewhat grown up) decides to find out about her father. She has some memory of him being a doctor (which seemed fishy to me while watching the show) and sets out to find him.

Emma and her accomplice, Craig, take the train a whole hour away to Scoffville (sp?) and enter a hospital. Craig sees Shane’s name on the wall and sends Emma up to sneak in to see him. Surprise, he’s not a doctor after all, but a patient. She meets him and they realize they are father and daughter. Shane has brain damage from his fall and when the nurse (named Elspeth!) comes in to tell him that Emma has to leave, he has a fit, and Elspeth says “Here, take your knitting, it calms you down!”

Shane proceeds to knit, and calms down. [At this point, my son DL, who is almost 6, says “A boy? Knitting?”] When we next see Christine (“Spike”), she is knitting. (See, I told you it was the knitting episode!)

Later on Shane leaves the hospital and visits Christine, saying that the baby she is carrying could have been theirs, and he could be married to her instead of her current husband (“Snake”, from “… Old School”, but we’ll save that for another day). He basically holds her hostage, and she goes into labor. Emma comes home for some reason and Shane flies into a rampage again. To which Emma reacts, “Here, take mom’s knitting, it calms you down!” He proceeds to knit. Oh, and later in the episode Shane is finishing the baby hat Christine was making and says “Your mom isn’t very good at knitting.” to Emma.

Can you believe it? Knitting soothes the savage beast.

That does sound like a knitting episode. Wait, this show is on in the middle of the day, right, on a kid’s channel? Well, I guess I was watching network soaps in high school.
